RADSAFE Members

The Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC) exists to police and protect all UK civil nuclear sites. CNC also staff the Constabulary Communication Centre (CCC), where RADSAFE and NAIR calls are answered.

HPA Radiation Protection Division provides training, services and advice on all aspects of radiation and radiation protection. HPA Radiation Protection Division has been contracted to provide training on RADSAFE and radioactive transport accidents. HPA Radiation Protection Division also co-ordinate the National Arrangements for Incidents involving Radioactivity (NAIR) scheme.

The National Arrangements for Incidents involving Radioactivity (NAIR) provide quick and widely available assistance to the police and other emergency services where no radiation expert is otherwise available.

The Department for Transport is the Lead Government Department for transport accidents in England and Wales and is the competent authority for approving radioactive material transport packages.

CHEMSAFE, the UK Chemical Industry Scheme for Assistance in Distribution Emergencies, is a voluntary scheme, run by the Chemical Industries Association (CIA). It has been developed specifically to respond to land-based chemical distribution incidents, including those at docks, harbours and airports. The Scheme applies to all chemicals, not just those which are classified as hazardous.

The World Nuclear Transport Institute (WNTI) promotes sound and objective principles for ensuring that radioactive material is transported safely, efficiently and reliably within a secure international framework.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an independent intergovernmental organisation in the United Nations family. It develops nuclear safety standards and, based on these standards, promotes the achievement and maintenance of high levels of safety in applications of nuclear energy, as well as the protection of human health and the environment.
