Radsafe Response >
:: Radsafe Response
RADSAFE is a consortium of organisations that
have come together to offer mutual assistance in the event of a
transport accident involving radioactive materials belonging to
a RADSAFE member.
The RADSAFE plan evolved from a number of earlier
emergency plans:
- Nuclear Industries/Rail Emergency Plan
- Irradiated Fuel Transport Flask Emergency Plan
- Scottish Nuclear Limited Irradiated Fuel Transport Flask Emergency
Plan
The intention has been to build on the good features of each of
these plans and to ensure there is no confusion about which plan
is activated by providing assistance in radioactive material transport
emergencies.
RADSAFE is based on the requirements of the emergency
services as our customers and draws on the principles of the national
Chemsafe plan.
The key principles of RADSAFE are:
- Early provision of general advice to the emergency services
- Guaranteed response
- Provision of framework for media response
- Ownership of clean-up action
RADSAFE ensures the early provision of advice
and support to the emergency services.
The transport of radioactive material has been undertaken safely
throughout Great Britain. Package design based on International
Atomic Energy Agency criteria have proved robust when subject to
accidents.
The industry is proud of this standard and wishes to maintain
this level of performance.
